What Lies Between Workplace Inclusion Intent and Impact?

According to Sarah Nicastro, the Creator of Future of Field Service, companies are increasingly prioritizing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives for various reasons, ranging from practical considerations to genuine belief in their importance. Some organizations may engage in DEI efforts to avoid negative perceptions associated with a lack of diversity or to address labor shortages, but the most compelling motivator is the recognition that DEI is truly significant. These companies embrace DEI not out of obligation, but because they understand that a diverse and inclusive workforce fosters creativity, innovation, and improved outcomes.

Although DEI is often discussed as a collective term, each component requires distinct focus and dedicated efforts to achieve. Among the three, inclusion is often the most challenging since it is inherently more complex than diversity (which can be measured through targets) or equity (which can be evaluated). Inclusion is closely tied to company culture and leadership, allowing biases and toxic elements to creep in unnoticed, making it difficult to identify, address, and rectify such issues.
