According to Sarah Nicastro, Creator of Future of Field Service, businesses in various industries are currently facing challenges related to labor shortages, changes in work dynamics such as location and schedule flexibility, and a significant increase in retirements and resignations within crucial professions. In the field service sector specifically, a substantial number of Baby Boomers are retiring, while younger workers with distinct backgrounds, skills, and expectations are joining the workforce.
The current situation of having more job openings than available workers has triggered a competitive race among companies to offer attractive perks and salaries to attract and retain employees. However, what receives less attention is the thoughtful consideration and assessment that companies are engaging in regarding the desired skills of these new workers. Based on conversations with various service leaders, there is a noticeable shift in emphasis from technical expertise to softer skills like communication, attitude, and teachability.
