May 5, 2022RutterKey Solutions wins the Greater Manchester AI Foundry Transportation Challenge hosted at HOST in Media City, Salford, Manchester
The RutterKey Solutions team based in Manchester, UK attended the Greater Manchester AI Foundry Transportation Challenge at HOST in Media City this week. The team participated in two rapid solution workshops to create an innovative solution in support of Greater Manchester wider Transportation Strategy.
The GM Transport Strategy 2040 focuses principally on creating an integrated, well-coordinated transport system that supports a wide range of different travel needs. With more than 5.6 million journeys are made across GM’s transport network each day, TFGM requires systems and tools that enable dynamic and robust support to be provided across the region, helping make travel easier.
The fast increase of digitalisation and the large amount of available data that can be obtained from several sources, makes artificial intelligence an attractive tool to work with complex problems, such as traffic management.

When managing the transport network across Greater Manchester, it is vital that those monitoring the network can react to incidents to minimise the impact on congestion across all modes as soon as possible. Ensuring TfGM can operate a safe, efficient and resilient transport network and improving the quality and availability of customer information. Therefore if we were able to utilise tools that could accurately predict future traffic conditions and incidents, integrate systems and provide next-generation traffic management systems; we can minimise congestion, the disruption to peoples journeys and look to make environmental improvements across the transport network.
The RutterKey team worked at HOST and participated with colleagues from Manchester Metropolitan University, Transport for Greater Manchester, The University of Manchester, the University of Salford, the Department of Transport. The team developed an innovative solution, for using smart parking across the whole of Greater Manchester. The innovative solution enabled citizens to maximise the use of public transport and their own transport in a holistic multi-mode approach. The platform would enable its users to make informed and sustainable choices for their individual transportation needs, simplifying planning and then travelling across the Greater Manchester area.
“RutterKey participated in the autumn cohort of the GM AI Foundry program, and this has been a huge leap in our understanding of how to apply AI and build world-class solutions that benefit our customers and our local communities. This competition demonstrates the benefit of the GM AI Foundry to businesses and citizens of Greater Manchester” - Alex Sharp, UK Director
